Escape from the River Lethe bangle bracelet

Escape from the River Lethe bangle bracelet

Here [at the chthonian oracle of Trophonios in Boiotia] he [the supplicant] must drink water called the water of Lethe (Forgetfulness), that he may forget all that he has been thinking of hitherto, and afterwards he drinks of another water, the water of Mnemosyne (Memory), which causes him to remember what he sees after his descent.
Pausanias, Description of Greece 9. 39. 3 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.)

The Greek word for truth is alethia, which translates as “not to forget”.  In that sense, the loss of truth and the rise of falsity in modern life represents a great cloud of forgetting.

edition: one-of-a-kind
made of: copper, 24k, vitreous enamel, iron oxide transfer
measurements: This detailed bangle measures 2 and 1/8th inches wide and has an interior diameter of 2 and 5/8th inches. I would call this a size medium.
process: The process for making this bracelet is labor-intensive. After fabricating the bangle form, the enameling process then involved laying layers of finely-ground glass onto the copper forms and firing them multiple times at very high temperatures in a kiln. Lots of protective gear involved at every step. Then I painstakingly gather, cut and arrange tiny fragments of text and imagery from many different eras in history and fuse them into the enamel along with 24k gold to tell the stories we may have forgotten.
